Our Purpose![]() We help accelerate growth. At Alder, we serve CEOs, companies, investors, and artists. What we do can vary greatly. From investment diligence to executive coaching. From market assessments to recording assistance. From organic growth lever analyses to sell-side corporate development. From vision articulation to functional expense allocation. At the same time, we're pragmatic, based on our deep work as functional GTM leaders (sales, marketing, alliances), general managers (Presidents, COO, CEO, Board Director). We've also been in the investor seat and understand the challenges of assessing companies and managing capital. And we are musicians with a deep love and respect for the creative process. We've seen a lot along the way. And with that, we're enthusiastic to help. To serve. To enable. To aid your journey. Learn about our Clients here. |
Our Approach01. Deliberately Fuel Initiatives
We've lived startups. Turnarounds. Hypergrowth. Market downturns. Huge IPOs. Flameouts and shutdowns, firings, and failures. We've seen a lot and yet remain energized about helping you learn, optimize, evolve, grow. 02. Insist on Value When you hire a consultant it's easy to rack up big bills and question impact. We demand that we're adding value. We'll also be the first to rethink models and arrangements—and if they're not working, proactively recommend you make a change. 03. Foster Authentic Perspectives Through our decades of work in both consulting and operational roles, we've figured out that nothing matters much if it's not authentic. While we might be optimists, we're also questioners and straight shooters. As independents, we seek to be genuine in our communication and recommendations. 04. Honor the Creative Journey As musicians, founders, writers, and artists, we have a deep appreciation, and respect, for the creative process. We strive to amplify the positive energy of our collaborative partners and clients. |
Why the Alder name?
Given that Alder isn't a common tree in many places, some might wonder why we chose it.
First, a bit of a primer. The Alder tree is a member of the birch family. Alder wood, when cut, can turn from white to red. It's often a symbol of strength, invigoration, protection, support and empowerment. The Alder was sacred to the Druids. In the Welch legend, Bran carried Alder branches.
Given the beauty of its tone and appearance, Alder is one of the woods used to make Fender Stratocaster and Telecaster guitars. As musicians, we love that Alder is sonorous.
Additionally, the Alder tree is resilient to water. Most of the pilings that provide foundational support to structures in Venice are made from Alder. As services providers, we love that Alder is supportive.
Further, Alder has a symbiotic relationship with Frankia alni, a nitrogen-fixing bacterium. Based on the relationship, Alder acts as a pioneer tree, improving soil conditions and providing additional nitrogen for other species to follow. As creators, entrepreneurs, and builders, we love that Alder is pioneering.
Since Alder Growth Partners is a service company focused on acceleration, optimization, and evolution, the Alder tree is an ideal companion and symbol. Sonorous, supportive, and pioneering, Alder is both our moniker and our inspiration.
So, then what about the Growth Partners piece of our name? In our work, we focus on key growth metrics for investors, CEOs, and businesses, including YoY revenue, bookings-to-quota capacity, GRR, NRR, and the Magic Number. We love Ruleof40, especially using the weighted approach.
Also, we're fundamentally a partnering organization; in other words, we collaborate with clients to produce results. And like the Alder-Frankia relationship (bear with us as hopefully we're not stretching this stuff too far), our approaches are symbiotic.
One point of clarification: in certain financial sectors a "growth-stage" company can have a very specific meaning. We're not that literal. We understand that growth is pivotal at all stages of a business (which is why you see us working with companies of 4 to firms of 4,000+ employees).
Note that there are some "growth equity" firms that are focused only on certain investment types (e.g. large equity purchases during Series B and Series C rounds). Some of them call themselves "Growth Partners." Sorry for any confusion, but we are not a growth equity firm.
Through the site, you'll see us use the name "AGP" as short hand. And props to the NetMen agency out of Buenos Aires, Argentina for the design of our logo. We hope that you like the name and design.
Thanks for letting us indulge our tree-head tendencies here. We appreciate your support as we strive to use the inspirational aspects of the Alder tree to build and deliver our offerings. To connect with us, please visit our Founder Steve Semelsberger's LinkedIn page.
